Squishy toys are made from foam and silicone, sold cheaply, and often imported with no paper trail at all. In 2026 regulators withdrew a squishy dumpling from sale after finding benzene in its outer layer. The product carried no batch number, which made it impossible to trace back to a production run.

What is a batch number and why does it matter?
It identifies which production run your item came from. If a fault is found, a batch number is what lets anyone recall the affected units instead of guessing. A toy with no batch number cannot be traced at all, which is exactly what happened in that 2026 case.
What tests apply to squishy toys?
For children's products sold in the United States, the CPSIA sets the baseline: lead and phthalate limits, and a Children's Product Certificate issued on the basis of third-party testing. ASTM F963 is the standard toy safety specification, covering small parts, sharp points and material safety. Internationally, EN 71-1 covers mechanical and physical properties and EN 71-3 covers the migration of certain elements, meaning what can transfer out of the material.
Why does my squishy smell of chemicals?
A strong solvent or fuel-like smell, often described as paint thinner, is not normal and is not something that airs out. It usually points to residual solvent left in the foam. Stop using it, keep it away from children, and contact the seller.
What age are squishies suitable for?
Most are rated 3 and over, because small or detachable parts are a choking risk for younger children. The rating is shown on each product page. Check it rather than assuming, especially on minis and keychains.
What we publish
We only state that a product has been tested where we hold the test report for that specific product. Where a report is not yet in our hands, the product page says nothing about certification rather than implying it. That is why some pages here are quieter than the marketing you will see elsewhere.
